Embassy of India organised a Hindi lanuage Competition

In Armenia there are currently three educational institutes where Hindi is taught as a subject. These are Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Bryusov, Yerevan Humanities Institute and Galiq College in Ijevan. On March 19 on the occasion of Hindi Day the Embassy of India organized a competition among the students of these three institutions.

At Yerevan State Linguistic University Hindi is taught as a second and third foreign language. The Hindi Chair at the University was established by Indian Council of Cultural Relations of the Government of India in February 2010. The lecturer is Mrs Anita Verma. Within one year, the number of students enrolled in learning Hindi has increased from 15 to 70.

Yerevan Humanities Institute started its activity in 1991. Hripsime Nersisyan who was studying Hindi at this Institute started teaching Hindi here in 2008 after completing her one-year scholarship at Agra University, India.

The Hindi class of Galiq College was established in February 2003. Hindi is taught by Astghik Aghajanyan who studied Hindi in India.

Among the 28 participants 7 were from YSLU, 7 were from YHI and 11 were from Galiq College. The participants were mainly girls and only 1 boy was there to represent Galiq College.

The competition was judged by three juries, namely Mrs Surekha Dani, Mrs Snigdha and Mrs Sumanlata. All of them are associated with Indian embassy and are the expert of Hindi.
The event was graced with the auspicious presence of Indian Ambassador in Armenia H.E. Mr. Achal Kumar Malhotra as the Chief Guest. The heads of two institutes Mr Arsen Bayramyan (Galiq College) and  Mikael Amirkhanyan (YHI) were also present there.

The competition consisted of 3 parts: Essay writing, Poetry, Speech.

The Essay topic was "Hindi language and me" ("Main aur Hindi bhasha").Poetry: the participants were so much excited to show their Hindi skills that instead of one poem they were ready to read 2.

Speeches varied from Armenia to India, from Indian national clothes to main dishes. One was showing the symbols of Bharat (India, as Indian people call their country), another one was telling about famous Armenian writer Khachatur Abovyan. "The meaning of colors in our life" and "National Festivals in India and Armenia". Each student was trying to express their knowledge of Hindi - the language which is spoken by over a billion people in India and all over the world.

A special surprise was a song performed by YHI students "Ek tu hi brhosa".
After a coffee break when all the participants and guests were taking photos and discussing the event the jury announced the winners of the competition. The winners of the first 3 places were granted praises in the form of monetary rewards. The most praised participant was Violeta Abrahamyan from Yerevan Humanities Institute receiving praises from three nominations. However no one was left without appreciation. All the participants received encouraging presents: a calendar and educational books about India.

Congratulating all the participants, 2 Hindi teachers Hripsime Nersisyan and Astghik Aghajanyan told about their professional life: what is Hindi in their life how they made the decision to tie their life with India.

The event was resumed with a dance under Indian tunes making everybody come together and herald the coming of the most colorful and joyful festival Holi.
